Why tilt-and-turn is the standard
It has been the best-selling opening system in Spain, Germany and France since the 1990s. This isn't marketing: the tilt-and-turn mechanism solves five separate problems with a single set of hardware and a single handle. 30 years of real-world use in continental and Mediterranean climates prove it.
Closed (handle down), full inward swing at 90° (horizontal) and 80-120 mm micro-ventilation tilt (handle up). One accessory, three daily uses.
The sash tilts about 10° from the top: air enters directed upwards, with no draught over the bed or sofa. Ideal for sleeping with fresh air in summer without the AC on.
Tapered security bolts + Secustik closure + P4A laminated glass certify RC2 to UNE EN 1627: 3 minutes of resistance to professional tools. Approved by insurers.
Perimeter multipoint locking + double EPDM gasket = Class 4 air (the maximum under UNE EN 12207). Sliding windows don't exceed Class 3 — tilt-and-turn is structurally tighter against Levante gusts.
In tilt position the opening is only 80-120 mm: no child fits through. Optional key-locking handle for children's rooms — the window becomes unusable without the key.
Full inward swing = clean the outside of the glass from inside the home. Critical in high-rise flats (8th, 12th floor) where opening a sliding window outwards forces you to lean halfway into the void.
How the hardware works
The Roto NT/NX or Maco Multi-Matic tilt-and-turn hardware is a precision-engineered assembly with over 180 components coordinating the compass, tilt scissor, perimeter bolts and load-bearing hinges. Each turn of the handle drives a different system:
Important: never turn the handle with the window open — it makes the sash drop. Close first, then change mode.
Roto NT standard: 10,000 cycles. Roto NX premium with Secustik: 25,000 cycles + anti-lift. Maco Multi-Matic KS: 20,000 cycles + 4-position micro-ventilation.
Recommendation by room
Not every room needs the same opening type. Tilt-and-turn shines in openings 60-150 cm wide with daily use and a real need for micro-ventilation. These are the 4 scenarios where we always specify it.

Large living room with a 2.5 m opening or more? Better sliding or lift-and-slide HS — tilt-and-turn loses its sweet spot above 1.8 m of sash width.

Opening 50-130 cm wide
The simplest: one handle, one sash. Ideal for small bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens with a single opening. Max sash 1,300 × 2,400 mm. Base cost: 380-450 €/m².
Opening 130-220 cm wide
Best seller in medium living rooms: one sash with all functions, the other casement only (no tilt). A central mullion hides the closure. Cost: 450-550 €/m².

Technical specifications
The hardware is everything
70% of tilt-and-turn faults come from the hardware, not the profile. That's why we use Roto NX (German) in every premium tilt-and-turn — the extra cost of €28-45 per window is more than paid back in years of service life.
A 1.2 × 1.4 m sash carries 8 perimeter bolts (4 side + 2 top + 2 bottom). Simultaneous locking at 8 points with one handle turn.
Lower anti-extraction claw: blocks the "lift the sash" technique used to force the window open. Standard on NX since 2018.
Hinges adjustable in height (±3 mm), depth (±2 mm) and sideways (±2 mm) without removing the sash. Compensates building settlement in 10 minutes.
The handle can't be moved from outside (manipulating bolts with a screwdriver). Patented by Roto. Approved by German insurers.

Frequently asked questions
The extra cost of tilt-and-turn vs plain casement is only €25-40 per window (Roto hardware with tilt scissor). In return you get safe micro-ventilation, child anti-pinch and night-time ventilation without AC. In 14 years we haven't sold a single plain casement for residential use — always tilt-and-turn.
80% of faults come from sash drop (the lower gasket rubs the frame). Fixed by adjusting the eccentric rollers on the upper and lower hinges — 10 minutes with no dismantling. To prevent it: never turn the handle with the sash open. Lubricate bolts with PTFE silicone once a year.
Kömmerling 70 AD: 380-450 €/m². Kömmerling 76 AD: 460-540 €/m². Difference ~80 €/m² or 17%. In return you improve Uf from 1.3 to 1.1 W/m²K (8% better insulation), add a double EPDM gasket and Roto NX hardware (25,000 vs 10,000 cycles). For a main residence: worth it. For an occasional holiday home: 70 AD is enough.
Yes, they are the safest on the market. In tilt position the opening is 80-120 mm — a child does not fit. For full peace of mind, we add a key-locking handle (Roto Secustik): the window is unusable without the key. Extra cost €8-12 per window. Recommended by European paediatricians.
Useful, but only if used properly. In summer it lets you sleep with fresh air without the AC on (30-40% saving on night-time electricity). In bathrooms it prevents post-shower mould without opening fully. In kitchens it vents steam during cooking. Not useful in dry basements or decorative windows.
Yes, fully compatible with integrated monoblock shutters (Catral, Persax) or standalone external shutters. The shutter mounts on the sub-frame and doesn't interfere with the 3 modes. Extra cost for integrated shutter: +18-25%. We recommend Somfy motorised models if the window is tall or heavy.
It's always repairable. Roto NX hardware is replaced piece by piece (bolt, hinge, scissor, handle) without dismantling the window. Average repair cost: €45-120 depending on part. We stock Roto parts at the workshop. We only replace the window if the PVC profile has structural cracking (rare before 25 years).
Manufacturing: 10-14 working days from quote signature. Installation: 1-2 days per home with 6-10 windows. Total from first contact: 3-4 weeks. For a community of 50+ homes, we plan in blocks of 2-3 weeks each.
