Why choose mixed

6 technical reasons that set mixed windows apart

A mixed window is not painted uPVC nor aluminium with a filling: it is a structural uPVC profile with a 1.5-2 mm lacquered aluminium skin mechanically fixed to the outside. Each material works where it performs best.

🌡️

uPVC insulation, Uw 1.1-1.4

The core is a multi-chamber uPVC profile (5-7 chambers) with steel reinforcement. Same Uw as a premium pure uPVC window — the aluminium skin does not penalise thermal performance.

☀️

Aluminium skin against UV + salinity

A lacquered aluminium skin (QUALICOAT class 2) protects the uPVC from 320 days/year of Mediterranean sunshine and from beachfront salinity.

🎨

Style + full RAL freedom

The aluminium can be lacquered in any RAL (anthracite 7016, stone grey, bronze, wood effect). Slim, modern outer lines — white uPVC stays only on the inside.

📐

Visible outer frame 50-65 mm

Aluminium allows slimmer sections than uPVC: 50-65 mm visible frame vs 70-110 mm for white uPVC. More daylight, better views, minimalist facade.

🔄

Interchangeable AluClip

With Kömmerling AluClip and Salamander systems the outer skin can be removed without touching the uPVC. You can change the RAL colour every 15-20 years — the uPVC stays as new.

🏛️

Approved by strict owners' associations

It keeps the facade uniformity that building managers demand. The outer aluminium is lacquered to the block's RAL while the owner gains uPVC insulation.

Anatomy of a mixed window

What exactly is a mixed uPVC + Aluminium window

A mixed window combines two distinct profiles mechanically joined — not painted or coated. The typical cross-section:

  • Inner uPVC profile, 70-88 mm, multi-chamber (5-7), with 1.5 mm galvanised steel reinforcement. It is the structural and insulating element.
  • Outer aluminium skin, 1.5-2 mm, oven-lacquered (QUALICOAT class 2) in the customer's chosen RAL. Visible frame 50-65 mm.
  • Joining system: mechanical clip (Kömmerling AluClip, Salamander) or structural (Internorm, Finstral). Allows differential expansion.
  • Triple EPDM perimeter gasket + Roto NX multi-point hardware. Total frame thickness: 70-88 mm insulation + 1.5-2 mm aluminium.
  • Triple Climalit 4/16Ar/4/16Ar/4 glazing optional, or double low-e Climalit Plus as standard.

Not to be confused with: wood-effect foil uPVC (a decorative vinyl, not aluminium), or thermal-break aluminium with foam infill (that is pure aluminium with thermal break).

When to pick mixed

6 applications where mixed beats pure uPVC or aluminium

It is not a universal answer: in an inland flat away from the coast, pure white uPVC is still better value. These are the 6 scenarios where the aluminium-skin premium pays off.

Beachfront chalet with high salinity

Cabo Cervera, Cabo Roig, Cala Fustera. The outer aluminium withstands salinity without fading; pure uPVC yellows in 8-12 years under those conditions.

Modern villa with an anthracite facade

When the architect specifies RAL 7016 anthracite, RAL 9005 black or wood effect. Foil-laminated uPVC in dark colours degrades quickly on the coast.

Owners' association requiring facade uniformity

Blocks with strict RAL rules. Mixed lets each owner gain uPVC insulation without breaking the building's image.

Premium holiday flat

When the owner wants to maximise property value. Mixed is perceived as mid-to-upper range — pushes sale price up by 3-6% according to idealista 2025.

Home with large glazing (>2 m)

The outer aluminium reinforcement allows slimmer sections — better styling on large openings. Pure uPVC needs visibly heavier reinforcement.

Refurbishment with frames visible from the street

Alicante Old Town, Calpe village, Altea Old Town. The aluminium is lacquered to the existing colour — sails through municipal inspection.

Written warranties

Dual warranty and maintenance

A mixed window uses two materials — both covered by independent warranties. This is what we sign into the contract.

10-year inner uPVC warranty

10 years on the uPVC profile: no yellowing, no warping, no loss of air tightness. Covers Kömmerling, Salamander, Schüco, Internorm.

15-year QUALICOAT aluminium warranty

Colour stability of the oven-lacquered class 2 finish. No UV fading, no flaking, no rust. Special RAL: 10 years.

5-year Roto NX hardware warranty

Multi-point closure, no rust on hinges and locks. If closure fails or the sash sags, replacement at no cost.

2-year sealing warranty

Perimeter sealing with Sika Boom foam + neutral silicone. If leakage or condensation occurs, we return at no charge.

Inner uPVC maintenance

Cleaning with water and neutral soap. Annual greasing of hardware with silicone grease. No aggressive chemicals.

Outer aluminium maintenance

Cleaning twice a year with fresh water (especially beachfront) to wash off salt. Aluminium polish every 5-7 years in very salty areas.

Mixed-window FAQ

The most common questions about mixed windows

What is the premium for mixed vs pure uPVC from the same brand?+

The AluClip aluminium skin adds €80-150/m² to the base uPVC price for the same brand. A pure Kömmerling 76 AD = €450-650/m²; mixed Kömmerling AluClip 76 = €580-850/m². On average, a 25-30% premium. It is recouped through property-value uplift (+3-6% per idealista 2025) and exterior colour durability (15+ years longer than foil-laminated uPVC).

And vs pure thermal-break aluminium? Which is better value?+

Cortizo COR 70 RPT aluminium: €600-1,100/m². Mixed Kömmerling AluClip 76: €580-850/m². Practically the same range, but mixed offers 35% better thermal insulation (Uw 1.1 vs 1.8 W/m²K). Pure aluminium only wins on openings >3 m high or for extreme minimalist styling. For 90% of homes, mixed is the better value.

What RAL colour can I choose for the outer aluminium?+

Any RAL across the full palette + anodised (gold, champagne, bronze, black). Best sellers on the Costa Blanca: RAL 9016 traffic white (35%), RAL 7016 anthracite (28%), RAL 9005 matt black (12%), wood effect (10%), matt bronze (8%), other special colours (7%). If your RAL is not in stock, add 5-8% for bespoke lacquering (+2 weeks lead time).

Does the aluminium withstand beachfront salinity?+

Yes. With QUALICOAT class 2 lacquering (standard on mixed) it easily withstands 25+ years of Mediterranean salinity. For highly exposed beachfront (Cabo Cervera, Cabo Roig, Calblanque) we recommend QUALIMARINE: a specific anti-salinity treatment with a 25-year colour warranty. Add 8-12% to the aluminium price.

Will the owners' association usually approve mixed windows?+

Yes, almost always. In fact, strict associations prefer it to pure white uPVC because it can keep the block's exact colour (lacquered to the existing RAL). We provide a technical sheet and physical sample to bring to the meeting. In 14 years, zero rejections on aesthetic grounds.

Can it be paired with a built-in shutter?+

Yes — every mixed system accepts a monoblock shutter (integrated box), an outer traditional shutter or Internorm I-tec-style systems with a shutter hidden inside the frame. We recommend an insulated box so as not to lose the mixed window's thermal performance. Add €80-150/m² depending on shutter type.

What is the total lead time for mixed vs pure uPVC?+

A pure Kömmerling uPVC window ships in 10-14 days. A mixed window: 3-5 weeks. The difference: QUALICOAT lacquering of the outer aluminium runs by batch and adds 2-3 weeks. If you ask for a non-standard RAL (not in the manufacturer's stock), add another 1-2 weeks. Plan with headroom — especially if you need delivery in July or August.

Dual maintenance? Does it cost twice as much as pure uPVC?+

No. Inner uPVC maintenance: water + neutral soap, annual hardware greasing. Outer aluminium maintenance: fresh-water rinse twice a year (beachfront) or annually (further inland). Total extra time a year: 30 minutes per window. No special products, no painting — the oven-lacquered finish stays intact for 15-25 years.
